Reports are coming in that Chinese Box Office numbers have dropped by 2.7% this year.
For most of the 2010s, box office statistics in China have been pretty high. However, according to screendaily, there has been a significant drop in Chinese Box Office numbers this year. This will be the first time since 2011 that these numbers have been this low. Movie admission in China is also down by 10%. Last year, film admissions brought in 900 million dollars. This year, it has only bought in 807 million dollars. Meanwhile, the amount of screens in the country has increased, with 3492 new screens being added.
The Chinese media has cited multiple reasons for this drop, including the rise of streaming services and the price of movie tickets. The ongoing trade war between the United States and China is also another cited reason. Local film productions are the ones hit the hardest by this decrease since they are 47.5% of the film market of China. Despite this, America movies have had strong box office numbers. Films like Avengers Endgame and Bumble Bee have brought in hundreds of millions of dollars. Japanese and Indian films have also had steady and high box office numbers.
