Character of Colour: Shuri | Black Panther

Today’s Character of Colour of the Day is none other than the smartest in the MCU, Princess Shuri of Wakanda!

Anything Bruce Banner or Tony Stark did, Shuri did better, and there’s nothing you can do but stan.

In the movies, Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, is an 18-year-old genius who runs the R&D (Research and Development) for the entire fictional nation of Wakanda.

She’s created vibranium clothes and tools that make life in Wakanda easier for all its citizens. From the Kimoyo beads for communication, T’Challa’s Black Panther, the sonic gauntlets she used to fight Killmonger and Thanos’ armies.

In the comics, however, Shuri walks a far more interesting road.

When T’Challa is left comatose by Namor and Doctor Doom, she takes on the mantle of Black Panther to defend Wakanda without the powers that come from the heart-shaped herb. This dedication to the Wakandan people makes the Goddess Bast take notice, after which She gives Shuri the capabilities and title of Black Panther.

She also gains powers no other Black Panther has, from her time with the griot spirit.

She can animorph. She can turn into a giant crow or a hundred regular sized ones. She can fly without being a bird. She has super speed and a stone form, similar to that of Emma Frost. Most fun of all, she can perform necromancy.

Hopefully, we get to see all of these powers come to life in the upcoming Black Panther movie.
