Malorie Blackman is a British author who most well known for her series Noughts and Crosses. Typically set in a dystopian world or with a strong element of science fiction, her books discuss relevant social issues, race and ethics.
Born in London, England, in 1962, she has Barbadian ancestry.
Focusing on content aimed at children and young adults, Blackman has written over 60 books, as well as concentrating on television scripts and theatre plays. Blackman was the first person of colour to ever write for the BBC show Doctor Who. She scripted the 2018 episode, Rosa, which was about the Black activist Rosa Parks.
Blackman has used her platform to speak up about Black activism in Britain, and as Children’s Laureate has travelled up and down the country, educating young people about the pleasures of reading.
Noughts and Crosses is her most successful series, it began in 2001, and it still being spoken about today in 2020. It has been adapted for the stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company as well as other smaller theatres across the UK. In 2020 the BBC released a six-part drama based on the book starring Jack Rowan and Masali Baduza as the main characters. Noughts and Crosses also made the BBC’s list of “100 most influential novels”.
Malorie Blackman currently lives in Kent, England, with her husband, where she continues to inspire a generation daily.
